Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day

Only a third of boys and a quarter of girls meet the recommendation for at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day and latest statistics also show that almost 30 per cent of adults are active for less than 30 minutes per week – so everyone needs to get up and get active!

The Medical Research Council Human Nutrition Research Centre and the Department of Health has used evidence from a range of sources to identify the main areas where families with children need support to limit the risk of unhealthy weight gain. These barriers are:
limited parental awareness of weight status and associated health risks
parental beliefs that a healthy lifestyle is too challenging
pressures on parents which undermine healthy food choices
a perception that there are limited opportunities for active lifestyles
