Case study

Involving parents, older volunteers and learning about recycling

Families are encouraged to join the sessions as supporting volunteers to help inspire their children, and they along with their children enjoy and benefit from harvesting and eating the produce they have grown.

During the project children learn the importance of earthworms and how waste matter is composted. They use recycled compost sourced from the Edmonton Waste Centre and this helps to highlight the unsustainable use of peat-based composts and at the same time encourages them to use the Council's food waste recycling service.

Volunteer adults working with the children include older members of the community, making the project intergenerational, with older/younger community members enjoying healthy activities together thereby promoting health and wellbeing for all and supporting independent living.
