Set up in 2004, the Sonshine Club exists solely to help improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in Hackney and Haringey. Our work is centered around key lifestyle issues including:
Health & physical wellbeing and Educational Attainment regardless of their social circumstances, disability or financial hardship.
Hackney and Haringey have one of the highest rates of child poverty in London. Our children are most often from families living in overcrowded council properties with no access to a garden or safe outdoor space to play.
Children from low-income families have been shown to be more likely to be obese than children from top-income homes and many have poor understanding of the benefits of healthy eating and exercise. These disadvantages impact on children’s health, education and life chances with startling long-term affects, not only for the individual, but also for the larger community, as poor health and education creates a dependency on social welfare.
The Sonshine Club provides the necessary support to aid these children in achieving the life skills they need to perform in daily life and to progress intellectually and physically.
